CHANDIGARH: As strength goes up in

government schools

, the norm of making one student sit on one bench has gone for a toss in many schools. According to

teachers

of different government schools, sanitation of premises is also not being carried out daily. A few

schools

have, however, thought of a way out and are calling

students

on alternate days.

With board exams nearing, strength of students in classes IX to XII has gone up. As a result, schools are finding it difficult to adjust students. These include schools from the periphery as well as some of the city schools, which have high strength in senior classes.

“In our school, we often see two students sitting on one bench because the number of students is high,” said one of the teachers from a periphery government school.

Though teachers say that is not a big issue as students wear masks and carry sanitisers and are repeatedly told to maintain

social distancing

. However, sanitisation is not being conducted in some schools regularly. Some schools do not have proper machinery needed to do the same.

“We have raised the issue with our principal, but nothing has been done so far,” said a teacher from a periphery village school, requesting anonymity.

On the other hand, many schools have taken proper steps to adjust students. They are calling them on alternate days. The UT education department has released helpline numbers for board classes. The helpline includes contacts of lecturers and senior teachers of different subjects and a senior counsellor.
