Chandigarh bar association elections today
Chandigarh: As many as 2,248 advocates of the Chandigarh District Bar Association (DBA) will elect their new president on Friday. There will be a tough fight between two former presidents of the DBA, Sunil Toni and Ashok Chauhan, for the president's post. Toni served as the DBA's president in 2015 and 2021, while Chauhan held the position in 2005, 2013, 2014, and 2018.The polling will start at 9:30 am and conclude at 4:30 pm. The counting of the votes will start at around 5:30 pm, and the results are expected by 9 pm.An election committee has been formed for the election, and advocate Davinder Singh has been appointed as the returning officer. His team includes assistant returning officer Mandeep Pathania, Gurpal Singh Randhawa, Poonam Thakur, and Mandeep Kumar. Davinder Singh said voting will be done through ballot paper this time. Last time, electronic voting machines were used.Interestingly, a controversy also arose regarding Ashok Chauhan's candidacy for the position of president in the bar council. The allegation was that no candidate can contest the election after serving as president three times. Chauhan already served as president four times, so there was a demand to reject his nomination. The matter reached the Punjab-Haryana Bar Council, but it was revealed that the bar association never enforced its constitution. Therefore, the council did not accept these complaints and allowed Chauhan to contest the election. There looks a close fight between three advocates, Gagandeep Goyal, Gurdev Singh, and Sandeep Gujjar, for the post of vice president, while two advocates, Vivek Mohan Sharma and Amrish Sharma, are in the race for the post of secretary in the DBA.A woman advocate, Pooja Diwan, has been elected for the post of joint secretary unopposed. Four advocates, Sunil Kumar Pandey, Balwant Singh, Ujjwal, and Mandeep Singh Kaler, are contesting for the post of treasurer. Arun Jangra and Dinesh Kumar will fight for the post of library secretary. The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association (HCBA) will also hold the election of the HC Bar Association on the same day, with seven contenders vying for the president's post. The electoral process will involve around 5,000 advocates who will vote to select various office-bearers, including the president of HCBA. The presidential candidates include Vikas Malik, Sartej Singh Narula, Anil Pal Singh Shergill, Ravinder Singh Randhawa, Chouhan Satvinder Singh Sisodia, Nirbhay Garg, and Dr Kanu Sharma. The candidates' primary electoral promises include better financial assistance, facility upgrades, and support for women practitioners.
