Cancer cases rising in villages along Ghaggar, claims Selja

Chandigarh: Sirsa MP Kumari Selja on Saturday expressed deep concern over the rapidly rising cases of cancer in Haryana. She said that, along with Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, Haryana is also increasingly becoming a cancer-affected region. Citing recent data, Kumari Selja said that, on average, around 68 people die of cancer daily in Punjab, while nearly 50 deaths occur every day in Haryana, indicating an alarming health situation.She stressed that the govt must adopt a long-term and effective policy focusing on environmental protection, clean water sources, pollution control, and improved healthcare infrastructure. Selja urged the govt to treat the issue as a priority and take immediate concrete steps to protect the health of the people of the state. Selja added that she has repeatedly raised the issue of rising cancer cases in her parliamentary constituency, Sirsa, and nearby areas in Parliament and consistently tried to draw the govt's attention to the matter. However, she alleged that the govt did not show the required seriousness in addressing this grave problem.She said that a significant increase in cancer cases is being observed, particularly in villages located along the Ghaggar River. According to her, rising pollution in the river, deteriorating water quality, discharge of industrial waste, and excessive use of pesticides are among the major reasons contributing to the growing health risk. "If these issues are not addressed in time, the situation could become even more severe in the coming years," she warned.Selja urged the govt to take effective steps to control pollution in the Ghaggar River, and ensure its proper cleaning. The MP also demanded that advanced cancer treatment facilities and modern hospitals be established in cities near the Ghaggar belt districts, such as Sirsa, Fatehabad, Jind, Kaithal, and Ambala, so that patients can receive timely treatment without having to travel to distant metropolitan cities.
