Calls to mental health lifeline double in year
Chandigarh: A state-run mental health helpline has emerged as a critical safety net in Haryana, fielding more than 16,000 calls as more residents seek support for anxiety, depression, and suicidal distress. The Tele-MANAS service, launched in late 2022, has seen a dramatic spike in engagement over the past 12 months. Officials report that more than 60% of its total call volume occurred between May 2025 and April 2026, signalling a major shift in public trust and a reduction in the stigma surrounding psychological care.Emergency IntegrationIn a move to bolster crisis intervention, the govt has integrated Tele-MANAS with Haryana's "112" emergency response system. Suicide-related distress calls made to emergency services are now diverted instantly to specialised counsellors.Dr Sumita Misra, additional chief secretary for health and family welfare, said: "This is a transformative step in ensuring mental healthcare is accessible and affordable for every citizen." The service, which offers confidential counselling via toll-free numbers, has seen high participation from rural and semi-urban areas. The system handled 16,159 calls as of May 10, 2026, while 9,669 of those calls were received in the last year alone. The counsellors addressed stress, grief, substance abuse, and self-harm ideation, primarily. The helpline operates under the National Tele Mental Health Programme, giving 24-hour support to callers from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
