PANCHKULA: A bus veered off the road, broke a railing and overturned after falling from a bridge on the Panchkula-Naraingarh road on Monday, killing an 18-year-old college student and injuring 20 persons.
The Haryana Roadways bus was heading to Ambala from Naraingarh when it developed a technical snag, causing the accident near Chotegarh on the Shehzadpur road around 8.30 am.
Police said it appeared that the steering of the bus got locked.
The injured alleged the driver tried to avoid ramming into a bus coming from the opposite direction. Baldev Singh, one of the injured and a resident of Naraingarh who suffered multiple fractures, said, "The accident happened as a bus was coming from the wrong side and our driver tried to avoid it. We are fortunate to be alive."
Manit, a resident of Berpura and student in Bagwali College, Naraingargh, was brought dead to PGI in Chandigarh. He was going to visit his relatives. Passers-by rescued the victims and informed the police. The injured were rushed to General Hospital in Sector 6, from where 15 of them were referred to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh and five to PGI, Chandigarh.
According to police officials, no case was registered against anyone yet.
"We were focusing on the rescue operation. We are yet to gather full details. If need be, we will check about the role of the other bus too," claimed Parmod Singh, investigating officer, Naraingarh police station.
