Bomb threat email triggers panic across Chandigarh

Chandigarh: Panic gripped the city on Thursday morning after authorities received another email threatening bomb blasts at multiple sensitive locations — including nine schools, Chandigarh secretariat, Chandigarh airport and the residence of Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini.The email warned of explosions at different locations at staggered timings — 1.11 pm, 2.11 pm and 3.11 pm — prompting security agencies to swing into action well ahead of the specified hours and place the city on high alert.Schools named in the threat included St Soldier International School, Sector 45; Ryan International School, Sector 49; Ajit Karam Singh International Public School, Sector 45; Saupin's School, Sector 32; St John's School, Sector 26; Kundana International School; Shivalik Public School; Vivek High School, Sector 38; and Delhi Public School, Sector 40.Following receipt of the threat, police, intelligence agencies, the bomb disposal squad and dog squad teams launched extensive search operations at schools, government buildings, the secretariat, airport and other vulnerable locations. Security was tightened at the airport and VIP zones, with heightened vigil around the chief minister's residence.Additional police force was deployed at schools and public places, while patrolling and blockades were intensified across the city. Though no suspicious object was found during the searches, security agencies continued checks as a precautionary measure.Preliminary investigation revealed that the email contained inflammatory and objectionable language, prompting authorities to take the threat seriously. Sources said there have been several instances since 2025 in which over 50 schools received threat emails simultaneously.The cyber cell and other investigative agencies have launched a probe to trace the source of the email. IP addresses and digital footprints are being examined through technical analysis. While officials said the possibility of a hoax by miscreants could not be ruled out, the mention of high-security locations warranted a thorough investigation from all angles.The administration appealed to residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading or believing rumours.
