BJP wants to take credit for women’s reservation: LoP

Chandigarh: Taking a dig at the BJP-led Union government for claiming credit for the women’s reservation, leader of opposition in Punjab assembly Partap Singh Bajwa on Tuesday said it was the Congress party that had first advocated for women’s reservation.The senior Congress leader reminded the BJP that the concept of women’s reservation was originally conceived by the Indian National Congress. He pointed out that it was former PM Rajiv Gandhi, who in May 1989 had introduced the Constitution Amendment Bill aimed at securing a one-third reservation for the women in both rural and urban local bodies. However, the bill faced an impasse in the Rajya Sabha, he said. TNN

NC not against Women Reservation Bill

The National Conference (NC) vice president, Omar Abdullah, stated that the party is not against the Women Reservation Bill and supports its implementation. Abdullah emphasized that the party itself has implemented women reservation in panchayats and other areas. He added that the party has no objection to women getting the opportunity to become representatives of the people. Abdullah also highlighted that the party has capable female leaders and it would not impact the party's prospects in Jammu and Kashmir.

The bill proposes reserving one-third of seats in Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women to enhance their participation in policy-making.
