Amritsar: BJP leader and former Punjab minister Laxmi Kanta Chawala has questioned the state government’s move to suspend Amritsar deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Amarjit Singh Bajwa and two other police officials.
“I am not aware if such an action has been taken against police officials in case of crimes like indignity to women or even murder,” said Chawla on Thursday while questioning, “Have they committed a major offence?”
On June 15, a police party entered the office of Sandeep Singh Bawa, officer on special duty (OSD) to Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh while searching for suspects in a case of theft of cement bags.
The party was accompanied by two Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders, which made the Congress leaders go after the personnel involved in the raid. They not only demanded their suspension but also registration of an FIR against them.
Chawala alleged the camp office of the OSD to CM minister has forcibly occupied couple of rooms in the PWD guesthouse. “If police personnels are humiliated, they will hesitate taking action even against the hardcore criminals. They will first ensure that the place of raid doesn’t belong to any ruling party politician,” she said.
She appealed to Amarinder to reconsider the suspension. “The episode does not reflect justice, which will directly impact the common man,” Chawla said.
