Bid to courier opium to Canada via Chandigarh fails

Chandigarh: UT Police have booked an unidentified person for attempting to ship opium concealed in two courier parcels destined for Canada. The parcels were booked through DTDC at Plot No. 25, Industrial Area, Phase 1, Chandigarh, and were intercepted after staff found their contents suspicious.According to the complaint filed by Rajiv Kumar, 46, manager at DTDC's Industrial Area office, he and his team were processing consignments when they noticed two parcels of identical size. Though the sender details on the boxes differed, both carried the same mobile number and email ID, raising suspicion. The recipient names were different as well.The parcels had arrived from Guru Nanak Courier, Sangrur, Punjab, and were meant for delivery to two addresses in Canada. Sensing something amiss, Rajiv alerted Police by calling 112. A team from Industrial Area Phase 1 police station reached the courier office, where the complainant handed over both parcels.As per procedure, the Mobile Forensic Team was also called, and entries were made on the e-Sakshiya app on the spot. Both parcels were opened on camera and examined using a Drug Detection Kit.On opening parcel number 1, officials found two black shampoo bottles and five medicine strips. One of the bottles, when tested with the kit, returned positive for an opium-like substance. The total weight of the bottle and contents was recorded as 180 grams.Police seized both parcels and registered a case under the NDPS Act against unknown accused. A probe has been initiated to trace the sender and the origin of the narcotics.
