CHANDIGARH: Criminals are in for a tough time on Panjab University campus. Authorities have planned to put up high resolution CCTV cameras on all the gates and other locations. These would replace the existing ones, that are of a low resolution.
The new devices would be able to capture video footage of all vehicles entering the premises.
Model of the vehicles, registration numbers and the drivers would be captured on film.
Panjab University has identified sensitive zones on the campus and to control eve teasing, cameras would also be installed on the route to the girls hostel.
PU chief security officer P K Dhawan said, ''We hope for the betterment of discipline in the university. The high resolution CCTVs would prove beneficial.''
Dhawan said recordings would be made at hostels, library, administrative block and other zones.
''Though recent thefts at the library were recorded on camera, the footage was not clearly visible being of low resolution,'' chief security officer said. Dhawan said the non-functional cameras at the student centre would be replaced and would be regularly scrutinized.
Dean Student Welfare (DSW) Naval Kishore said, ''Security guards regularly patrol the campus to keep a tab on miscreants. CCTVs would be an added benefit.''
PU had installed cameras in 2009, only a few are in working condition but do not capture clear images.
