Going strict against the violation after finding that very less was being done to curb the menace of drunken driving in Mohali district, deputy commissioner Girish Dayalan has directed sub divisional magistrates (SDMs) and deputy superintendent of police (DSPs) to be present during the

drunken driving nakas

in their respective jurisdictions.

Dalayan issued the orders while chairing a review meeting on road safety on Thursday. He said, “The district administration is going strict in drunk and driving matters and nakas would be set up at all important spots so as to nip the menace in the bud. We have observed that drunken drivers have been taking the law in their hands with impunity in the district, putting lives at risk. We have been receiving complaints that people, when caught on drunken driving nakas, get spared by influencing the duty officer by some VVIP. Directions have been given to SDMs and DSPs to be present on the spot in their jurisdictions ensuring that no one, caught driving under the influence of liquor, gets away.”

He added that 91 accident prone black spots had been identified and the district administration was in the process of evolving corrective measures to avoid loss of precious lives. “The administrative officials will be holding drunken driving nakas on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at all key points in the district,” said Dayalan.

He added, “I will be holding another meeting with the district and session judge requesting him to set a precedent of sending drunken drivers to jail as is the case in Chandigarh. This will send a strict message to violators not to take law in their hands.”
