Bathinda hotelier elected PCA President

BATHINDA: Hotelier and entrepreneur from Bathinda, Amarjit Singh Mehta got elected as new president of Punjab Cricket Association on Saturday. His unanimous election had become imminent when he turned out to be lone candidate for the prestigious post on February 23, the last day on withdrawal of nominations.

Apart from him, Preet Mohinder Singh Banga has been unanimously elected as vice president and Sunil Gupta as the treasurer. Apart from them the three embers have been chosen for the apex council.

Mehta is also joint secretary and spokesperson of the Punjab unit of Aam Aadmi Party and considered close to Rajya Sabha member Raghav Chadha. His facebook page has the cover photo with AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal where it has been mentioned as joint secretary and spokesperson, AAP Punjab.

Punjab Cricket Association is one of the premier Cricketing body in the country affiliated to Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The presidentship of PCA is considered a powerful sports position in the country. Before Gulzar Inder Chahal, industrialist Rajinder Gupta, Chairman Trident Group was PCA President.

The post of president had gone vacant after the previous incumbent Gulzar Inder Singh Chahal had resigned in October 2022 after serving only over 4 months upon some issues with Cricketer turned MP Harbhajan Singh. The process for election was put in motion on February 7, 2023 with February 19 as last day for filing nominations and February 23 being the day of withdrawal after scrutiny of papers.

Before joining Aam Aadmi Party in 2021, he was considered close to former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal though he was not formally associated with any political party. He had deep relations in Shiromnani Akali Dal and Congress during the respective governments in Punjab.
Earlier into liquor business, Mehta lately shifted to hotel industry. He presently has a hotel and food street at Bathinda. He has also business interests into automobiles industry.

Mehta said being a sports enthusiast his focus will only be on promoting the game of Cricket and his son will look after the business.
