Asked to stop, cop run over by car

PANCHKULA: Police have arrested two youths on charges of allegedly attempting to run over a cop. The accused will be produced before the court on Tuesday. According to police, the two youths, identified as Sunny Kapoor, 30, resident of Sector 11 Panchkula and Harry, 29, resident of Sector 20 Panchkula have been arrested from Sector 15 market on Monday following a tip-off.

Sector 14 police station house officer (SHO), Inspector Lalit Kumar said that they have also recovered a White Swift in which the two were travelling when they allegedly hit the cop who had signalled them to stop their car at a check post on the Sector 11-15 dividing road at Bhagat Singh crossing.
The cop was injured after being run over by the speeding vehicle and he had suffered a fracture in his leg and is under treatment at Civil Hospital, Sector 6 Panchkula.
Kumar said that during the preliminary interrogation the youths claimed that they got scared after they saw police signalling them to stop and instead of stopping the vehicle, the driver pressed the throttle pedal.
Police said that Harry who was about to leave for Canada after 15 days has now been arrested on charges of attempt to murder and obstructing public servant from discharging public functions.
The incident occured on the intervening night of December 1/2. Panchkula crime branch received a tip-off suspecting that some miscreants are trying to enter the city posessing illegal weapons.Upon receiving the information, the police laid a checkpost and nabbed the two men. However, no weapon was recovered from their possession.
A case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused.
