BATHINDA: A farmer protesting at the Shambhu border died in the early hours of Friday, raising the death toll to nearly three dozen since the protests began on February 13, 2024.
Farmers have been demanding a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP) based on the C2+50% formula, along with debt waivers.
The deceased as Pargat Singh (65) from Kakkar village in Amritsar district, owned two acres of land and had been part of the protests for a long time.
According to farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, Singh woke up early in the morning and collapsed. Fellow protesters rushed him to Rajpura Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The exact cause of death will be determined after a viscera examination.
Pandher said Singh is survived by two married daughters and an unmarried son. He demanded Rs 5 lakh in compensation and a government job for the family. He urged the central government to act swiftly on farmers' demands to prevent further deaths.
