Residents of Nijampur village caught the man from a gurdwara in the wee hours of Sunday.
They alleged that he was seen "disrespecting" the Nishan Sahib (Sikh flag) around 4am.

After receiving information about the incident, a police team reached the spot and took the man into custody. However, the villagers insisted that the suspect should be questioned in front of them at the gurdwara itself.

The man was killed by the locals following a scuffle with the police.

The standoff between police and Sikh groups continued even as the suspect was in police custody inside the gurdwara compound. The Sikh groups did not allow the cops to take the man away.

In a video streamed live on Facebook, gurdwara caretaker Amarjit Singh said when he came out for the daily prayers at 4am, he saw the youth disrespecting the Nishan Sahib.

The identity and age of the youth are yet to be identified.

Earlier, a youth was beaten to death by the enraged sangat and sewadars at the Golden Temple after he jumped in front of the Guru Granth Sahib in the sanctum sanctorum during the recital of rehras sahib (evening prayers) on Saturday evening.

He scaled the railing as the devotees watched in horror, stepped on the ‘rumala sahib’ (cloth around the holy book) and picked up the sword placed in front of it, disrupting the religious services.
