Kaithal: Repeat of Gohana-like robbery was prevented as alert employees spotted a tunnel being dug into their bank premises in Kaithal on January 16. The incident relates to the State Bank of Patiala branch in the town where a tunnel was dug to make way to the bank's strong room containing 160 lockers.
Even after 23 hours of the matter being reported to it, the police were clueless about the failed burglary attempt.

Kaithal superintendent of police Krishan Murari said they were probing the matter and would nab the culprits soon.
The spot in the bank's backyard from where the robbers had started digging the tunnel could hardly be noticed as it was covered by grass. However, a few bank employees noticed a broken exhaust fan window in a room adjacent to the strong room. "Taking advantage of grass in the backyard, robbers had started digging the tunnel to the strong room. They had just dug only a three-foot pit when some bank employees noticed it," said Kaithal Civil Lines station house officer Vikramjit Singh.
Branch manager S K Garg said the bank staff showed presence of mind to deduce from the broken exhaust fan window that there was suspicious activity taking place. "When they looked further, they found the spot from where the tunnel was being dug," he said.
