Amritsar boy shot dead in Canada, family seeks help to bring body back
Amritsar: Tragedy struck the village of Devidas Pura near Jandiala Guru in Amritsar district as news broke that young Simranjit Singh, who lived in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, was shot dead by unidentified assailants. According to the family, Simranjit went to Canada in 2023 to pursue his studies. "I sent my son abroad with high hopes, expecting that he would complete his education and become a support for the family," said his grieving father, Sukhdev Singh, an agriculturist and dairy farmer. Simranjit's uncle, Kulwant Singh, said that Simranjit was supporting himself while studying and recently applied for Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) at his own expense. He also held a 10-year visa for the United States and was progressing well in his career. The family had high hopes because of his PR application and US visa, he added. Tragically, unknown assailants shot him, taking his life. The news left his family devastated.Kulwant Singh added that Simranjit lived with his friends for some time. In Dec 2025, some of his new friends helped him shift to another place. He paid for all his expenses himself, including filing for PR. The family suspects that these new friends betrayed him, and may have killed him for money.
Diljit Singh, Simranjit's younger brother, said that the Canadian police contacted the family on Jan 14 to inform them that "Simranjit is dead", and later confirmed that he was shot on Jan 12 and his body was recovered from a forest. The police also informed the family that an investigation was launched to apprehend the accused and determine the motive behind the murder, the younger brother added. He said the Canadian police informed them that they would provide further updates later in the week. The family has appealed to the Indian govt and Canadian authorities to ensure justice and apprehend the culprits as soon as possible. They also requested assistance in bringing their son's body back to India. MSID: 126548498 413 |
