Amritsar blast: Security beefed up in district

Ludhiana: Security has been beefed up in Ludhiana district, especially around religious places, after three people were killed and 20 injured in a grenade attack on a religious congregation in Adliwal village on the outskirts of Amritsar on Sunday. The police are treating the incident as a terrorist act.

Ludhiana deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Ashwani Kapoor said in the wake of the Amritsar incident, patrolling and checking have been increased in the district. “There are three Nirankari bhawans in Ludhiana — near Bharat Nagar Chowk, on Tajpur Road and Tibba Road — where adequate security arrangements have been made.”

Police said checks are being carried out at bus stand, malls and busy markets, including those at Sarabha Nagar, Model Town, Civil Lines, Chaura Bazaar and Field Gunj, among others. “Religious places, too, are under watch and CCTV cameras installed there are being scanned,” a cop added.

Security has been beefed up in Khanna, too. Khanna SSP Dhruv Dahiya said, “Check posts have been set up in the town and patrolling intensified. There are Nirankari bhawans in Samrala, Machhiwara and Khanna, among others.”

Cops are also on alert in Ludhiana rural areas.

Ludhiana rural deputy superintendent of police (investigation) Amandeep Brar said, “Besides Nirankari bhawans in Raikot, Sidhwan Bet, Mullanpur Dakha and Jagraon, cops have been deployed around other religious places, too, including Radha Soami Satsang deras and RSS shakhas in the area. There will now be adequate police deployment during religious functions.”
