Amritpal to face trial via video link as HC flags public order risk

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court has permitted virtual trial proceedings in a criminal case involving Khadoor Sahib MP and radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh, citing concerns over public order and state security.In a detailed order released on Sunday, the high court held that Amritpal Singh's preventive detention was set to expire on April 22, 2026, and observed that his physical production in a trial court in Amritsar could potentially trigger a breakdown of law and order."There are sufficient reasons to believe that exceptional circumstances exist, including a live and proximate danger of breach of public order," the bench stated.Accepting the state's submissions, the high court allowed the trial court in Amritsar to conduct all remand and trial proceedings virtually. The court also directed the authorities in Assam to facilitate Amritpal Singh's access to legal counsel via video conferencing to ensure a fair trial.The bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry passed the interim order while hearing a petition filed by the Punjab govt.In its plea, the state sought directions to ensure that Amritpal Singh remains lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam and participates in all legal proceedings through video conferencing.The state contended that such measures were necessary given the gravity of the charges against Amritpal Singh, which include serious offences under the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act, stemming from a 2023 case registered in Ajnala, Amritsar (Rural).During the hearing of the case, Koustov Gogoi, public prosecutor, Assam, was also heard virtually. Gogoi reiterated the consent given by the state of Assam.
