chandigarh:the punjab and haryana high court on friday adjourned further hearing in the bail plea preferred by punjabi university vicechancellor jasbir singh ahluwalia to april 23. till then, the stay granted by the court against his arrest would continue. the case which was part-heard by justice ml singhal on thursday, came to be listed before justice rc kathuria as singhal did not hold the court on friday.
singhal is scheduled to go out for inspection some district courts next week. the bail has been sought by ahluwalia in the case of alleged attempt to rape saru rana, a final year student of the fine arts department of the university, registered against him at the sadar police station, patiala. the vice-chancellor also faces another case of alleged attempt to murder harvinder singh bhatti, a reader in the sociology department of the university, which too was registered at the same police station. his arrest had also been stayed in this case too, though ahluwalia has moved writ petitions for quashing the firs and the subsequent proceedings. security for haryana congress leader: justice ks garewal of the punjab and haryana high court, while disposing of the writ petition preferred by sirsa district congress committee president kk godara, who is also a former member of the zila parishad, and his sons sunil, rajinder and surinder, directed the sirsa ssp to provide security to the petitioners because of perceived threat to their life. the petitioners had submitted that there was a property dispute involving another family and alleged that despite threat to their lives, the police was not taking action because of the influence of the inld legislators from dabwali constituencies, who were political opponents. however, garewal ordered that security would be provided at the cost of the petitioners. beant case accused's family plea allowed: justice adarsh kumar goel of the punjab and haryana high court allowed the writ petition of tarlok singh chhabra, father of navjot singh of mohali who is one of the accused in the assassination of then chief minister beant singh, for cancellation of the trespassing and intimidation case registered at the mohali police station against him, his wife santokh kaur and daughter anita in 1998 under sections 452 and 506 of the ipc. the matter was inquired into and nothing came out of it. navjot singh, along with some other accused in beant singh case, is currently lodged in burail jail in chandigarh. dean selection issue: notice to pgi: the punjab and haryana high court division bench of justices rl anand and amar dutt on friday issued notice for april 9 to director, post graduate institute of medical education and research (pgi), chandigarh, union health secretary and sarla gopalan, a professor and a head of department at pgi, on an application filed by sudha suri, also professor and head of the department at pgi. suri, whose writ petition pertaining to seniority claim a-vis gopalan is pending before high court, has sought that the proceedings pertaining to the selection of the dean for pgi due to take place in the governing body meeting on april 10, be retained in sealed cover during the pendency her writ petition. the appointment of on nagi as the pgi dean had been struck down by the division bench of justices amarbir singh gill and swatanter kumar, which was also subsequently upheld by the supreme court.
