900 seats sliced in Haryana tech institutions
CHANDIGARH: Students in Haryana will be competing for 900 seats less for admission to Engineering, Business Administration and Computer Application courses during 2005-2006 academic year if the institutions penalised by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) do not improve their faculty strength by July 7 this year.
After a “single comprehensive inspection” of the institutions in the state, the AICTE has sliced 900 seats in the approved intake for 2005-06 as compared to the existing intake.

In taking the decision the AICTE has largely focused on the most critical deficiency that is the shortage of faculty - while giving institutions another year to make up for the other deficiencies.
However, the council has given another opportunity to the institutions to seek restoration of intake upto their sanctioned intake of 2004-05 by making up for the deficiency in faculty by July 7.
A majority of the seats (nearly 500) have been slashed in Engineering and Technology courses, especially Information Technology. The second highest casualty has been Master of Computer Application (MCA) course which has lost roughly 370 seats.
There are institutions like the DAV College of Engineering and Technology, Kanina, in Mahendragarh district, from which approval for all the existing 180 seats in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communications, Engineering and Information Technology has been withdrawn.
Another institution hit severely is the Bhiwani Institute of Technology and Science, which has lost half of its 210 seats in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Electronics and Communications Engineering.

The fate of two other engineering institutes - Swami Devi Dyal Institute of Computer and Information Technology in Panchkula district and Institute of Technology and Management, Gurgaon: against which serious complaints have been reported at the time of inspection and also by the state government, hang in the balance with the council deferring a decision on extension of approval to them till June 15. The two institutes have a student intake of 480 and 370, respectively.
For the MCA course, three institutes - Shah Satnam Ji Institute of Technology and Management, Sirsa, JVMGRR Institute of Computer Application, Charkhi Dadri, in Bhiwani district, and GVM Girls College, Sonipat have lost approval for all their 60 seats each.
