50 doctors linked to ‘5 Rivers’ organisation secure US mentorship
BATHINDA: Several physicians affiliated with a US- and Punjab-based medical charity organisation ‘5 Rivers Heart Association,' will be part of residency programmes at premier medical institutions in the US.
Nearly 50 medical graduates have matched into the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), a US-based, non-profit organisation that pairs medical school applicants with residency programmes. Those matched as resident doctors in US institutes are likely to get roughly $200,000–$250,000, nearly Rs 2 crore, during three-year residency.
Medical NGO ‘5 Rivers Heart Association,' founded by Punjab-origin cardiologist Dr Swaiman Singh, who is associated with UC Davis California, provided mentorship to these medical graduates and, in return for intensive mentorship, all members commit to being ready to serve in humanitarian crises whenever called upon. Every participant is required to complete 28 days of on-the-ground service in real-world humanitarian efforts.
Speaking to TOI from the US, Dr Swaiman Singh said that for the past 12 years, the 5 Rivers Heart Association has provided free, high-impact mentorship and guidance to aspiring medical professionals from high school students to those in college and medical school, who are pursuing careers in medicine, with a special focus on securing residency and fellowship positions in the United States.
To date, the organisation has guided over 150 students into matched residencies in the American medical system, including 51 this year. The majority of these mentees hail from India, representing various states. Graduates have secured coveted positions at some of the world's most prestigious institutions, including Mayo Clinic, Harvard University, University of California campuses, and the University of Pennsylvania, he added.
