5-time gallantry medal winner Bikramjit Singh Brar promoted to SP rank
Chandigarh: Punjab Police anti-gangster task force (AGTF) deputy superintendent of police Bikramjit Singh Brar, who is a five-time awardee of the President Police Medal for Gallantry, was promoted as a superintendent of police (SP) by the Punjab govt on Monday. He is among three Punjab Police Service (PPS) officers who have gotten the rank of SP.
The Punjab home department placed PPS officers Brar (direct recruitment 2018), Guriqbal Singh (direct recruitment 2017) and Sarvanjit Singh (direct recruitment 2016) in the rank of SP, following recommendations made in an April 23, 2025, meeting of the departmental screening committee. He joined Punjab Police as an ASI in 2002 and rose to the rank of inspector before joining as direct DSP in 2018. He said he resigned on technical grounds in 2018, the year he was recruited as direct DSP. In 2011, when he was awarded the gallantry medal, he was a sub-inspectorDuring his posting as AGTF DSP, Brar played an instrumental role in India and overseas operations, which led to the neutralisation and arrest of dreaded gangsters, smugglers, terrorists and arms suppliers involved in organised crime.Brar's father, late Baldev Singh Brar, also a PPS officer, was martyred during terrorism in 1988 in Patiala, where he was serving as SP (detective). Brar's elder brother is also a senior PPS officer, presently serving as SSP, vigilance, Ludhiana.Brar was awarded his first President Police Medal for Gallantry in 2011 for police action against dreaded gangsters of the Rajiv Raja gang; the second in 2020 for the neutralisation of three gangsters in Rajasthan, including Vicky Gounder and Prema Lahoria; the third in 2021 for neutralising dreaded gangster Ankit Bhadu and rescuing a family, including two minor girls, held hostage by the gangster in a flat near Zirakpur; the fourth in 2024 (on Republic Day) for neutralising two shooters, Jagroop aka Rupa and Manu Kusa, involved in the killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala; and the fifth in 2024 (on Independence Day) for the neutralisation of three notorious gangsters, including Tejinder Singh aka Teja.He was also awarded the Union home minister's Special Operations Medal in 2022 for sharing actionable intelligence which led to the neutralisation of dreaded gangster Jaipal Bhullar and Jassi Kharar in West Bengal; the chief minister's Rakshak Padak in 2023; and 27 DGP commendation discs.
