MOHALI: The local police have arrested a woman immigration agent after four years. She was produced in a court here on Wednesday and was her to judicial custody, said investigating officer ASI H S Mand.
Identified as Saru Singh, the accused was booked in September 2019 in an FIR related to fraud to the tune of Rs 16.5 lakh.
Mand said the FIR was registered by Chandigarh resident Tejinder Kumar, who had accused Saru of duping him on the pretext of sending him to Canada on work visa. Saru was operating from her office in Industrial Area, Phase-VII Mohali.
Tejinder Kumar had alleged that after watching an advertisement, he had approached Saru Singh for work visa for Canada. Saru had assured him that she would get work visa and demanded Rs 20 lakh, but the deal was struck at Rs 18 lakh. Tejinder gave Rs 5 lakh as advance and after some time Saru sent him a visa clearance video and asked him to deposit balance money. So Tejinder transferred Rs 16.5 lakh in the account of Saru Singh.
Later, when Saru did not respond about the ticket and flight status, Tejinder cross checked the visa copy and found that it was fake. Then Tejinder approached Saru and on insisting Saru refunded Rs 2 lakh cash and cheques worth Rs 14.5 lakh, which bounced.
Thereafter Tejinder approached the police and following his complaint, the police registered a case under various sections of the IPC and the Punjab Travel Regulation Act, 2014, against Saru Singh in September 2019. Since then she was absconding and now has finally been arrested. tnn
