Kullu: Train services on the Pathankot-Jogindernagar narrow-gauge line, popularly known as the Kangra Valley Railway, will resume on June 2, nearly four years after operations were disrupted by the collapse of the Chakki railway bridge during floods in 2022.Northern Railway will initially run two pairs of passenger trains between Pathankot and Baijnath Paprola, restoring rail connectivity along one of Himachal Pradesh's most important transport corridors. An inauguration ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday morning."We are resuming services with two pairs of trains initially. All necessary inspections have been completed and the route is fully ready for operations," said Vivek Kumar, general manager, Jammu Division, Northern Railway. The resumption is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters and boost tourism across the Kangra Valley. The line serves as an affordable transport link for students, employees, traders, patients and tourists travelling between Pathankot, Nurpur, Kangra, Jwalamukhi, Palampur, Baijnath and Jogindernagar. However, local activists have demanded restoration of all services that existed before the disruption."The reopening is welcome, but the railway cannot be considered fully restored until all seven trains that operated before the suspension are brought back," said P C Vishwakarma, president of the Kangra Valley Railway Struggle Committee. The services are resuming after the reconstruction of the Chakki railway bridge on the Punjab-Himachal Pradesh border. The bridge suffered extensive damage during floods in the Chakki rivulet in August 2022, when five piers were washed away, forcing suspension of rail traffic on the route.Railway officials said the new bridge was built at a cost of nearly Rs 70 crore following studies by experts from IIT Roorkee and has successfully completed trial runs and safety inspections.Opened in 1928, the 164-km Kangra Valley Railway is India's longest narrow-gauge railway line. Running through the foothills of the Dhauladhar range, the British-era railway is on UNESCO's tentative list of World Heritage sites under the Mountain Railways of India category.
