4 turbaned among 11 Sikh MPs in UK parliament, 5 are women

JALANDHAR/BATHINDA: Four turbaned Sikhs are among the 11 newly elected Sikh MPs — including five women — in the UK parliament. All of them are from the Labour Party, which has swept the elections.

Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi and Preet Kaur Gill have been elected for the third time in a row. Dhesi was the first turbaned Sikh MP in the UK and Gill was the first Sikh woman MP when they were elected in 2017. They have won from Slough and Birmingham Edgbaston respectively.

The first-time Sikh MPs include Gurinder Singh Josan who has won from Sandwell, Jas Athwal from Ilford South, Warinder Singh Juss from Wolverhampton West, Dr Jeevan Sandher from Loughborough and Baggy Shanker aka Bhagat Singh Shanker from Derby South.

The first-time Sikh women MPs include Satvir Kaur from Southampton Test, Harpreet Kaur Uppal from Huddersfield, Kirith Kaur Ahluwalia commonly known as Kirith Entwistle from Bolton and Sonia Kaur Kumar from Dudley.

2 MPs backed farmers
Dhesi and Preet Kaur Gill had raised their voice in support of the farmer struggle at the borders of Delhi in 2020-21 and sought justice for slain Punjabi singer and rapper Shubhdeep Singh alias Sidhu Moose Wala. Dhesi (45) won from Slough and Gill (51) from Birmingham Edgbaston.


Just a day after protesting farmer Shubhkaran Singh was killed at Khanauri border on Feb 21, Dhesi had raised concern over the killing in UK parliament on Feb 22.

Both Dhesi and Gill had to face the ire of central gov for being vocal for protesting farmers and were la belled as Khalistan sympathisers. Farmers and the family of Moose Wala welcomed their victory.


Kisan Mazdoor Morcha convener Sarvan Singh Pandher said that both the UK MPs had raised voice for farmer struggle and against the killing of Shubhkaran Singh. Moose Wala’s father Balkaur Singh said he had met the duo during his UK visit and sought their support for justice and welcomed their re-election.
