4 singers in Congress ticket tune

BHATINDA: Four Punjabi singers are in the race for a Congress ticket in the 2017 assembly elections. Apart from eminent Punjabi singer and sitting MLA Mohammad Sadique, Satwinder Kaur Bitti and

Balkar Sidhu

are trying for a party ticket. Though Sufi singer

Hans Raj Hans

has claimed that he is not looking for a Congress nomination, his name is also doing the rounds.

Sadique, as per party insiders, is almost certain to be nominated for a second time by the party from Bhadaur (SC) constituency in Barnala district. Balkar, on the other hand, is trying hard to get the ticket from Maur constituency in Bathinda. Earlier, he had unsuccessfully contested the Talwandi Sabo byelection in 2014 as an independent candidate and had later joined the Congress. Bitti is said to be looking for a ticket from Sahnewal constituency.

Sadique said he was hoping for a party ticket from Bhadaur. “People of Bhadaur have given me lots of love. I will repay that on the formation of a Congress government in the state,” he said.

Balkar said the final decision rested with the Congress. “I am hopeful of getting a party ticket from Maur. In any case, I will respect any decision of the party,” he said.

The name of Hans Raj Hans, party insiders said, is doing the rounds from Jagraon and

Mehal Kalan

reserve assembly constituencies. Recently, he had shared the stage with Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh and Barnala MLA Kewal Singh Dhillon. Around that time, it was suggested that Hans could be given the ticket from Mehal Kalan. Hans, however, said he had refused to contest polls. “I have made it clear to the party that I will not contest the elections,” he said.
