PATIALA: Forcible locking of the vice-chancellor Punjabi University, Patiala, by protesting students continued for the fourth consecutive day on Saturday.
For the first time in the recent history of the varsity, students have managed to lock office of VC consecutively for four days as authorities failed to resolve the deadlock between two groups of students over the issue of ban on entry of four-wheelers on the campus.
A group of students, led by Democratic Students Organization (DSO), has refused to end the protest it is organizing in front of VC's office for the past four days. The students, protesting under the banner of DSO, are demanding the entry of cars owned by students and Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles in the university campus should be completely banned.
"The university has agreed to implement ban on cars. But what about Bullet motorcycles whose silencers keep the entire campus abuzz even during classes? Moreover, these speeding bikes have caused more accidents than cars on the campus. The varsity is silent on this demand. The protest will continue till authorities meet this demand," said Amarjit Singh Bajeke, general secretary of DSO.
"Nobody from the university has met us for the past two days. There is no deliberation on this issue. We don't know where is the VC and his interlocutors," he said. Agitation on issue of entry of vehicles erupted after two roadside accidents death and over a dozen accidents occurred in campus in the past two months.
On the other hand, members of 11 students' organizations, who are being led by SAD-affiliated Students Organization of India (SOI) and Congress-affiliated National Students Union of India (NSUI), also blocked university gates demanding that cars owned by students should be allowed to enter the campus.
