MOHALI: Police claimed to have busted two carjacking gangs operating in the district for the past two months, with the arrest of three people. The accused have been identified as Jashanpreet Singh and Karanveer Singh, both residents of Raipur Kalan village, Sohana, Mohali, and Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Haridwar, Uttarakhand.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sandeep Garg said the police have recovered two cars, a Maruti Swift Dzire and a Hyundai Eon, from the accused.
The SSP further said Jashanpreet Singh and Karanveer Singh had allegedly robbed one Gurwinder Singh of Mouli Baidwan village, Sohana, Mohali of his Maruti Swift Dzire on January 1.
The SSP said on December 23, 2022, Gaurav Sharma of Phase VII was driving home under the influence of liquor around 10pm. When he reached the intersection of the main road in Sector 34, Chandigarh, he parked his vehicle on one side and asked two persons standing there to take him home for a fee.
When the two reached near the YPS crossing, they allegedly threw Sharma out of the car and sped away. During investigations, Sandeep Kumar was arrested and the car recovered from him. His accomplice Dinesh Kumar is on the run, cops said, adding that he is likely to be apprehended soon. The SSP said that a team of SP Amandeep Singh Brar, and DSP Gursher Singh, along with CIA in-charge Inspector Shiv Kumar solved the two cases of carjacking and arrested the three accused.
