3 killed as speeding car rams e-rickshaw, cyclist
Chandigarh: Three people, including two women, were killed and three others injured after a speeding car rammed into an e-rickshaw and a cyclist near the turn between sectors 5 and 8 on Sunday evening. All the injured, including the car driver, were taken to GMSH-16 for treatment. Sector 3 police registered a case on a complaint fileld by a traffic police official and launched investigations.The deceased have been identified as Sushila, 35, a resident of Kaimbwala, who was riding on a bicycle with her husband, Hanuman. He suffered injuries in the accident. Two other deceased were e-rickshaw riders Raju, 40, and Mamta, 50. Another woman travelling in the e-rickshaw was also declared dead on arrival at GMSH-16.
Police said the accident took place around 4.45pm when the accused driver, Rahul, 28, a resident of Kishangarh in IT Park area, was returning home from Jayanti Majri, Mohali, in his Maruti SX-4 car. At the time of the crash, Rahul was alone in the vehicle. Police said he appeared to be under the influence of some kind of intoxication, although only a medical examination would confirm this.When Rahul reached the turn going towards Sector 5 before Hira Singh Chowk, his car hit an e-rickshaw carrying passengers from behind. After the impact, he lost control of the vehicle and also struck a cyclist and a Maruti Baleno coming from the Hira Singh Chowk side. At that moment, both the cyclist and the Baleno occupants were taking a turn from a cut in Sector 5.Police said the speed of the car was evident from the extent of the damage and the sequence of collisions. After crashing into the e-rickshaw, cyclist and Baleno, Rahul continued driving and took a turn from Sector 5, hitting another car heading towards Hira Singh Chowk. In total, six people—the cyclist, passengers in the e-rickshaw and the accused driver—sustained serious injuries. Occupants of the Innova and Baleno involved in the collisions did not suffer major injuries.All the injured were shifted to GMSH-16. One of the critically injured women, Mamta, was later referred to PGI, where she succumbed during treatment. Another woman admitted at GMSH-16 was declared dead on arrival.MSID:: 128389508 413 |
