Mohali: A local court on Thursday sentenced a man to 20-year rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping and raping a minor girl. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the convict.

The convict has been identified as Amit Bhardwaj, a resident of Kharar. He has been sentenced to 20 years in jail under Section 376 of the IPC and 10 years under Section 366 of the IPC and 7 years under Section 363 of the IPC.

According to the case file, on June 15, 2019, the father of the Class XI girl in his complaint to police alleged, “My daughter had to attend an NSS camp at her school. So, I dropped her at the school gate. When I went to pick her up in the evening, she was missing from the school. The NSS teachers told me that her name was not in the list of students attending the camp. I searched for her, but to no avail. Then someone told me that the accused had taken her along to get married.” The girl was recovered from the accused’s village in Uttar Pradesh on June 20, 2019. He was arrested on June 28, 2019. TNN
