2 ‘drug overdose’ deaths in as many days in Punjab

Bathinda: Two overdose deaths in two days has spoiled this city’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and iIllicit Trafficking. Mayank Yadav, 22, was found dead at Paras Ram Nagar on June 24 a day after the body of Arshdeep Singh, 23, was spotted in the outskirts’ bushes of Jassi Pau Wali.On the complaint of Mayank’s mother, Monika Yadav, his local contacts Vicky and Vansh were booked, while Vicky was also arrested. Cops from the canal colony police station of Bathinda registered this case under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 34 (common intent in crime) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Arshdeep Singh’s father, Gurdas Singh of Tungwali village, has accepted in his complaint that his son was into drugs, and on Friday, some anonymous people provided him a fatal overdose. A case under Section 304 of the IPC was registered at the Bathinda Sadar police station.Social activist Harmilap Grewal said that: “In the previous months, Punjab has lost many youths to overdose of easily available drugs. Many panchayats passed resolutions to act tough against drug peddlers, yet the supply hasn’t stopped.”Students from Akal Academy schools in Bathinda, Barnala, and Muktsar districts made more than 1 lakh hand impressions to enter the Guinness and Limca books of records for the largest synchronised oath against drug abuse. Students turned out from Bathinda, Jaga Ram Tirath, Kili Nihal Singh Wala, Bagha, Bangi Nihal Singh Wala, Damdama Sahib, Dialpura Mirza, Barnala, Bhadaur, Mehal Kalan, Rajia, Muktsar, Daula, Madhir, and Kolianwali.
