KARNAL: Wheat procurement is on for 13 days, yet no farmer has received any payment, even though the government had vowed to clear it in 48 to 72 hours. The farmers and commission agents have raised the issue with the local officials.
Till April 12, 35.2 lakh quintal wheat had arrived in the district's grain markets. Of this, the state agencies had procured 28.8 lakh quintals. The government agencies procured wheat for a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 2,125 a quintal. The first procurement in the district was on April 5 but a week later, the controlling authority is yet to transfer the payment to the farmers' accounts.
Karnal farmer Ramneek said: "I sold my 250-quintal produce to the government at the local grain market on April 7 but haven't received a single rupee of payment in six days." Farmer Isham Singh said: "On April 6, I sold the crop produced out of my 3-acre field, but have received no payment, so far." Karnal Arhtiya Association president Rajneesh Choudhary said: "If the state government claims to be disbursing payment in 48 hours of procurement and doing speedy lifting, why is the grain market full of wheat bags, and why are the arhtiyas and farmers unable to unload?"
