Utkal Diwas to be celebrated in disputed Odisha's Kotia panchayat
Koraput: The Koraput administration will celebrate Utkal Diwas at the panchayat headquarters of Kotia under Pottangi block on Wednesday in a significant outreach initiative aimed at reinforcing cultural identity and strengthening public engagement in the border region.
The programme assumes significance as Kotia remains a disputed area, with 21 of its 28 villages claimed by both Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Officials said the celebration is not only meant to mark the formation day of Odisha but also to sensitise local residents about the state’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
Collector (Koraput) Manoj Satyawan Mahajan said elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure active participation from villagers. “Utkal Diwas is a matter of pride for every Odia. Celebrating it at Kotia is a conscious effort to connect with people at the grassroots and highlight the cultural legacy of our state,” he said.
The collector added that a series of programmes, including cultural performances, awareness campaigns and community interactions, will be organised at the venue.
Block bevelopment officer of Pottangi Ramnath Nayak emphasised the importance of engaging the younger generation. “We want people, especially the youth, to understand the significance of Odisha’s formation and develop a strong sense of belonging,” he said.
Villagers have also expressed enthusiasm over the initiative. “We are happy that the administration is organising such a programme here. It makes us feel included and reminds us of our traditions,” said Arjun Pangi, a resident of Kotia.
Another villager echoed similar sentiments, stating that such events help bring the community together and create awareness among children about their cultural roots.
Officials said the administration hopes the celebration will not only strengthen cultural awareness but also foster closer ties between the govt and people in the sensitive border region, where there have been frequent attempts by neighbouring Andhra Pradesh authorities to extend welfare activities.
Both Odisha and Andhra Pradesh lay claim to 21 of Kotia’s 28 villages, with the boundary dispute pending before the Supreme Court since 1968.
