CUTTACK: The two mechanized sweeping machines of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) are lying defunct near Bikash Bhawan here for the past few months. The machines were procured by the CMC around two years ago. "Earlier, the machines were being used to clean the roads but it has been quite some time since I saw those in action. Most roads in the town are very unclean," said Rajesh Nayak, a resident.

He said the roads at Bajrakabati, Khannagar, Badambadi, Mangalabag and College Chhak are the most unclean.
The civic body introduced mechanized sweeping in 2011. Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited, a Hyderabad-based organization, was entrusted with the job of cleaning 58 main roads and the adjoining drains.
Sources said Ramky is charging around Rs 82 lakh per month for cleaning the town.
Cuttack mayor Soumendra Ghose said, "Lack of proper supervision could be a major reason behind such a problem. There could also be some technical problems with the machines. We will look into the matter."
