Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik graced the occasion. The Subarnarekha multi-purpose project is expected to be complete in 2017 with an irrigation potential of 94,655 hectare in Mayurbhanj and 14,972 hectare in Balasore.
Subarnarekha originates from Chhotanagpur plateau of Jharkhand. It flows through Ranchi and Singhbhum districts of Jharkhand, Midnapore in West Bengal and Balasore in Orissa.
A tripartite agreement, specifying allocation of water among the three co-basin states and the modalities for utilisation of water of Subarnarekha and Khadkai, was signed by chief ministers of Bihar, Odisha and West Bengal in New Delhi in August, 1978.
