All India Radio in Jeypore hit by severe staff shortage

Koraput: All India Radio (AIR) Jeypore, a vital source of information and entertainment in the tribal-dominated Koraput district, remains a favourite for its reach and tribal-language programs despite competition from television and social media. However, the six-decade-old station is struggling with a severe staff shortage.Currently, it operates with just 43 employees out of 130 sanctioned posts. A senior AIR official, speaking anonymously, said, "We are managing with the available resources, but the station urgently needs a programme executive to improve operations."Other vacancies include four out of six announcers and 10 out of 13 engineers, among others. "The Jeypore radio station is one of the oldest in the country and a source of pride for the region. Unlike television, radio's reach extends beyond electrified areas, making it indispensable for rural communities. Efforts must be made to revive the station," said Saroj Nayak, a Jeypore-based activist.Similarly, Dhiren Patnaik, secretary of Koraputia Kala O Kalakar, highlighted AIR's impact on local talent. "AIR has a unique identity for its programmes and has long provided a platform for local artists to showcase their talents. Reviving this station is crucial for preserving the cultural heritage of the region," said Dhiren.In 1993, the station's broadcasting capacity was upgraded from 50 to 100 kilowatts, enabling it to serve Koraput, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Rayagada, and Gajapati districts. Recently, its four studios were digitised, and its medium wave transmitter is undergoing upgradation.
