Keonjhar: The elephant calf, rescued from a forest pit in Bhuyan Juanga Pirha range of Keonjhar division, was on Sunday shifted from Padampur centre to Chandaka (Nandankanan) for its social raising and health management, said divisional forest officer (DFO) Dhanraj HD.
According to the forest department, the elephant calf was transported in a special vehicle, accompanied by a team of veterinarians, led by range officer Nayakant Sahoo, with an escort vehicle “rakshak”, as per the instructions of the principal chief conservator of forest, wildlife.
The Keonjhar DFO said the health condition of the elephant calf is good. “It has tested negative for elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus, and is responding very well to care and treatment,” the DFO said.
After it was rescued, the forest department shifted the calf to the Padmapur Elephant Rescue Centre, as its mother as well as herd did not accept it, despite several efforts.
