BHUBANESWAR: Muslims on Thursday offered mass prayers and exchanged greetings at several mosques and Idgahs (mass prayer grounds) across the state to mark Bakrid. The festival marks the completion of ritual of Haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. Police made elaborate arrangements to ensure a peaceful celebration.

The festival, also known as Bakrid, is celebrated to honour the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son on the command of God. The day, too, saw sacrifice of animals like goat and sheep. The faithful on the occasion were also seen sharing the festive mood with their friends from other communities. Governor Ganeshi Lal and chief minister Naveen Patnaik in their separate messages conveyed warm greetings and festival wishes to the community. They also wished for their all-round progress and prosperity of the community.

Congress legislator Mohammed Moquim, among others also greeted the people. The city witnessed a large congregation of faithfuls at Jama masjid in Unit 4 area and other mosques in the city for Bakrid prayers.
