Parth’s race from Taipei to victory in 100m at Jr National Athletics
Parth Singh, competing for Jharkhand, raced to victory in the men’s 100m final of the U20 category on the opening day of the National Junior Athletics Championships, being held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar for a second year in a row.
Parth, who has been living in Taiwan for the last 10 years, made a 16-hour long trip to compete in the tournament and grabbed the win in the 100m finals with a time of 10.52s on Friday. Earlier, he won the semifinals in 10.51s. Sadly, on both occasions, he missed the Junior World Championships qualifying mark of 10.50s.
As for Odisha’s Pratik Maharana and Punjab’s Jasjit Singh Dhillon, they won silver and bronze in a time of 10.72s and 10.79s respectively.
Despite failing to make the mark, 18-year-old Parth was over the moon after crossing the finishing line during the 100m finals and is aiming to win a gold in the long jump final which will be held on Saturday.
“It’s been very tiring because I travelled from Taipei to Bangkok to Delhi and then reached Bhubaneswar to take part in the event. I’m still happy with my performance but I think I could go even faster,” said Parth, who currently lives in Taoyuan with his parents and studies at National Taiwan University of Sport.
It’s not the first time that he is competing in India. Even last year he took part in the 19th National Youth Athletics Championships in Bilaspur and grabbed gold in 100m and bronze in the long jump.
That time he won in 10.68s to break the meet record of 10.74s. However, all this would not have been possible had coach Wen not asked him to try out athletics in the first place seven years ago. Since then, he hasn’t looked back and now wants to represent India on the world stage in the coming days.
While he did struggle because of the tight schedule, he was more than happy with the Jharkhand coaches who helped him get accustomed to the conditions. “Prabhat Ranjan Tiwari, Ramesh and Arvind Sir all helped me a lot here and my victory wouldn’t have been possible without them,” added the youngster.
Meanwhile, Haryana’s Himanshu booked his ticket to the World U20 Championships with a throw of 79.96m in javelin (700 gm) qualifying. In doing so, the Asian U18 Athletics Championships gold winner also bettered the meet record of 76.50m set in 2014 in Vijayawada by Neeraj Chopra.
Meet record was also created in the men’s U20 5000m race where Telangana Mohit Choudhary clocked 14:09.71 to better the previous meet record of 14:12.67 set by Vinod Singh last year. Tamil Nadu’s Abhinanth and Hariyant Pindwal of UP also set meet records in boys’ U16 60m run.
