BHUBANESWAR: Manoj Das, one of Odisha’s best known writers, passed away on Tuesday at Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry due to old-age related ailments. The 87-year-old novelist, poet, columnist, fiction and travel writer, was also a bold commentator on social issues and an amazing storyteller. As a bilingual writer he was prolific in both English and Odia and was a household name in the state. He has written hundreds of books and countless articles in newspapers.

Tributes poured in for the acclaimed writer from all sections of society. “He will continue to inspire generations through his timeless literary works,” Odisha governor Ganeshi Lal said following the news of his death.

Chief minister Naveen Patnaik, Andhra Pradesh governor Biswabhushan Harichandan, union minister Dharmendra Pradhan and others expressed condolences on the sad demise of the celebrated writer.

“No one will inspire the Odia readers the way Manoj Das used to do. This void will remain unfulfilled,” said noted writer Pratibha Ray. Das was awarded several awards including the Padma Shri in 2001 and

Padma Bhusan

in 2020.

Born in Balasore’s Sankhari village on February 27, 1934, Das was influenced by the teachings of

Sri Aurobindo

and decided to stay in Aurobindo Ashram, Puducherry since 1963. He was teaching English literature and philosophy of Sri Aurobindo at Sri Aurobindo International University.
