Odisha: Four die after gas leak at Rourkela Steel Plant

ROURKELA: At least four contract labourers working in

Rourkela Steel Plant

(RSP) died following a suspected toxic gas leak in the plant on Wednesday.


The four contract workers of M/s Star Constructions working in the coal chemicals department of Rourkela Steel Plant were among more than 10 people felt unwell at about 9am following the suspected coke oven gas leak.

Official sources said all the affected were shifted to Ispat General Hospital. Sources said the doctors declared the four dead at 11.40am.

A high-level committee has been formed to inquire into the cause of the incident. The plant is functioning normally.

The deceased contract workers were identified as Ganesh Chandra Pahil (55), Rabindra Sahu (59), Abhimanyu Sah (33) and Bramhananda Panda (51).

Dipak Chattaraj, CEO, RSP, expressed deep anguish over the untimely demise of the 4 contract workers. He has said that RSP will extend every possible support to the bereaved families.

It is suspected that the injured workers were affected with Coke oven gas while attempting to replace a pipe.
