ROURKELA: Using his father's service revolver, a police officer's son looted Rs 15 lakh from a bank at the Main Road area of Sundargarh town on Tuesday. However, due to prompt action by the Sundargarh police, the accused was arrested following a gunfight and the cash recovered.
The accused has been admitted to the district headquarters hospital with bullet injuries. Sources said around 2.20pm, Jaydeb Nayak, posing as a customer, entered the Axis Bank's Sundargarh town Main Road branch. He pointed a revolver at the cashier and asked him to hand over all the money from the cash counter. As the cashier screamed for help, the manager and other staff of the bank rushed to the cash counter.

Nayak, son of an assistant sub-inspector of Sundargarh Sadar police station, then aimed the gun towards the manager and asked him to direct the cashier to hand over the money to him. On putting the cash in a bag, the accused tried to flee with an accomplice, who was outside the bank on a scooter.
The police reached on time and chased the culprits for about 1.5km. The accused opened fire at the police during the chase and they retaliated. Finally, the duo was nabbed at Shankara area of the town.
"We have recovered the cash and the revolver from the culprit," said Sagarika Nath, SP Sundargarh.
