Berhampur: A human rights activist has moved the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking an inquiry into the death of a jailed pregnant woman after childbirth in Rayagada district on January 12.
Rabindra Kumar Mishra, a Berhampur-based rights activist, sought the intervention of NHRC in the death of Sulabati Nayak (32), who was among 13 women arrested while protesting for jobs in a private company and direct the company to provide at least Rs 50 lakh compensation to the family members of the deceased.
She was released on bail on January 10 and admitted to the district headquarters hospital, where she gave birth to a boy the same night.
When her condition worsened, she was referred to SLN Medical College and Hospital in Koraput on Wednesday night but she died on the way.
“Despite being a pregnant inmate, adequate medical attention might have not been given by the jail authorities. Medical negligence might be the cause of her premature death,” said Mishra.
Mishra asked if the company could offer Rs 5 lakh compensation and a job to her family member after her death following an agitation by villagers, why did it not provide a job to her when she was protesting.
