2022 at a special function here.
India won this coveted cup for the first time in the history of the Thomas Cup Championships since it started in 1948-49. Apart from hockey and cricket, badminton is the only sporting event where India became world champion in a team event, official sources said.
On the occasion, the CM felicitated chief national coach, P Gopichand, and players Kidambi Srikanth, Dhruv Kapila, Pronnoy HS, Priyanshu Rajawat,

Vishnuvardhan Goud

, GK Prasad, Arjun MR, Chirag and Rakkireddy Satwik Sairaj. The players received a cash award of Rs 10 lakh each and a memento. “India has now become a production centre for world champions in badminton. It is the dawn of a new era of Indian domination in badminton. Across the country, there is great interest among children and parents in badminton,” Naveen said, adding that it was unthinkable for India to dominate a sport like badminton even until a decade ago.
“Thanks to the dedication and commitment of coaches like Gopichand and the support of the badminton association, the central and state governments, India has been able to consistently perform well in international events in the last 10 years,” he said.
Lauding Odisha’s efforts, Gopichand said while every state is promoting its own sportspersons, Odisha is promoting all sportspersons across the country.
