BHUBANESWAR: The heatwave, along with hot and humid conditions, are persisting in the state, with the mercury soaring to 43°C in four towns on Saturday. Angul recorded the highest temperature at 43.5°C.

The other towns where temperature touched 43°C include Malkangiri, Boudh, and Titlagarh. On Saturday, the daytime temperature in 22 towns or cities was hovering at 40°C and above. A day after recording the highest temperature observed in April in the past eight years, the capital city recorded a maximum temperature of 39.6°C, while Cuttack was sizzling at 40.1°C.

“The state recorded its first two cases of alleged sunstroke deaths of the season, one each from Ganjam and Bolangir districts within a week,” said Padmanabha Behera, joint special relief commissioner (SRC). A separate report from a senior official in the state directorate of health said that eight alleged sunstroke deaths were reported from four districts within a week.
