Mahanadi tribunal team in Sambalpur
Sambalpur: Members of the Mahanadi water dispute tribunal on Saturday visited Sambalpur to study the situation on the ground.The tribunal is headed by its chairman, Justice AM Khanwilkar, while Justices Dr Ravi Ranjan and Indermeet Kaur Kochhar are its members. The Centre had constituted the three-member tribunal in 2018 under the Interstate River Water Disputes Act, 1956. Apart from the tribunal, the officials of the water resources department, technical teams, assessors and law experts from both Odisha and Chhattisgarh are also part of the team, which is on a visit to Sambalpur to take stock of the dam and conduct a detailed study on water management, inflow of the water into the dam and outflow of water from the dam. The primary objective of the tribunal is to examine and adjudicate the claims of both states regarding the sharing of water of the Mahanadi river. Official sources said the tribunal will consider various factors such as the availability of water, the existing utilisation patterns, and the requirements of each state.Earlier this month, the tribunal had visited the Kalma barrage and Kelo project in Chhattisgarh.
