Jajpur temple gets spruced up for President Droupadi Murmu’s maiden visit
Jajpur: President Droupadi Murmu will visit the Biraja Temple in Jajpur on Feb 3 to perform ‘pind daan’ rituals at Nabhigaya on the premises, marking the first visit by a president to the district since Independence, officials said.
“Massive renovation work is going on across Jajpur ahead of the visit and will be completed by Feb 1,” said Jajpur collector Ambar Kar.
Nabhigaya, considered one of the most sacred sites for ancestral rituals in eastern India, holds religious importance, drawing parallels with Gaya in Bihar. The president’s decision to perform ‘pind daan’ rituals at the site has brought renewed national attention to Jajpur’s ancient spiritual heritage.
The Biraja Temple complex has undergone a comprehensive makeover ahead of President Murmu’s visit, with authorities focusing on both aesthetics and devotee convenience.
“Stone flooring has been laid across key sections on the temple premises, while extensive plantation work has added greenery. The temple walls have been adorned with traditional wall paintings and fresh colours, enhancing the visual appeal while preserving its spiritual character,” said Kar.
“Nabhigaya has also been renovated and upgraded to ensure a dignified and orderly conduct of the ceremony,” added Kar.
Nabhigaya is mythologically considered the ‘nabhi’ (navel) of Sati, making it a sacred Shakti Peeth. It is also connected to demon Gaya, whose navel was trapped by Lord Vishnu.
In addition, major approach roads have been improved, refurbished, and several public spaces beautified as part of the preparations, giving Jajpur a refreshed look.
“Around Rs 6 crore has been spent on the renovation of Biraja Temple and Nabhigaya, improvement of approach roads, refurbishment of the Circuit House, and other civic infrastructure,” said Kar.
Civic agencies are working round the clock to improve cleanliness, lighting and approach roads leading to the temple complex.
“The visit is spiritually significant not just for Jajpur but for the entire state. Nabhigaya has long been revered and this will help revive its prominence at the national level,” said Bishnu Pani, a senior temple priest.
“For generations, people have come here for pind daan rituals. The president’s visit will give a significant milestone to the place,” said Arada Das, a resident of Jajpur.
