SAMBALPUR: To provide IT skill training at a nominal fee and to increase employability of students, an IT skill centre was inaugurated on the premises of Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) on Tuesday. The centre has been named after an alumnus of the institution, noted gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr Narayani Panda.

Higher education minister Rohit Pujari was the chief guest at the inauguration of the Dr Narayani Panda Centre for IT skills. Dr Panda was the special guest.

Deputy registrar U C Pati said majority of the students are from rural areas and many of them don't have computer knowledge. "Though IT skill is an essential requirement, many students are not able to acquire the knowledge as private computer centres charge a lot. The IT skill centre at the university will be a boon for such students as they will be able to gain the skill and knowledge by paying a nominal fee," Pati said.

The university is yet to finalise the fee to be charged from students. "We are planning to make IT training mandatory for all UG students. As many as 100 computers have been installed at the centre," he added.
