GSI starts chopper survey to map mineral wealth in Jajpur
Kendrapada: Geological Survey of India (GSI) on Friday started surveys using a custom-made advanced light helicopter (ALH) to explore mineral wealth in Sukinda and Danagadi blocks of Jajpur district.Equipped with latest magnetic, spectrometric, and gravity geophysical survey systems, the helicopter aims to provide high-resolution 3D imaging of subsurface geology up to a depth of 500 metres. The advanced technique enables precise, economical and data-dense mapping, facilitating geologists in understanding subsurface structures, regional tectonics and mineral prospecting. "The heli-borne survey will help geophysicists in data acquisition, processing and interpretation. Geologists will be able to carry out the integration of geological and remote-sensing data to understand subsurface geology. The regional tectonic setup will help in geological mapping and identification of target blocks for mineral prospecting," said Ganesh Chandra Bhuyan, senior manager, Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC), Jajpur. However, OMC was not informed by GSI before conducting the survey. Bhuyan said, "We came to know about it on Friday."Many locals alleged that GSI officials have not informed the district administration before launching the survey. When contacted, Jajpur collector P Anvesha Reddy said, "The district administration was not aware of the heli-borne geophysical survey."The incident also sparked panic among locals, mostly in Kaliapani, Chingudipala, Rasola and other tribal-dominated gram panchayats under Sukinda block, as many felt the govt will displace them to exploit the forest and its natural resources. "We panicked after watching a helicopter flying low and close to our house," said Bhaskar Pradhan of Chingudipala village.
